Obituary for George Salerno

George Salerno, 83, a lifelong resident of Tuckahoe New York, died peacefully on May 10, 2017. He is survived by his daughters, Katharine Salerno, Alexandra Salerno, and Antonia Salerno, and his nephew, Scott Salerno. He was preceded in death by his brothers Alphonse Salerno and Edward Salerno. Born on May 18, 1933 in Tuckahoe, George was the son of Italian immigrants Emma and Alphonse Salerno, Sr., original proprietors of Salerno’s Meat Market in Tuckahoe. George graduated from Tuckahoe High School, and studied art at the University of New Mexico. After serving in the US Army, George returned to New York and worked for Ballantine Beer and Ale, becoming the company’s top salesman in New York City. George went on to open Salerno’s Old Town Coach House restaurant on Main Street in Tuckahoe, originally a one-room tavern that he expanded to a three-dining room steak and seafood restaurant. Salerno’s received stellar reviews in countless publications including the New York Times, and became a landmark of lower Westchester for 40 years. The restaurant embodied George’s entrepreneurial and creative spirit. A lifelong cook, he excelled in creating an atmosphere of comfort and dining excellence. His family will be celebrating his life at a memorial gathering on Saturday, May 13, 2017, from 4PM-7PM at Westchester Funeral Home, 190 Main St, Eastchester.
